How the Pure Salmon Japan facility will look.

Fish handling expert Cflow wins contract for 10,000-tonne salmon RAS

Norwegian fish handling specialist Cflow has signed an agreement to deliver a complete system for a 10,000-tonnes-per-year recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) salmon farm currently under construction in Japan.

The project by Pure Salmon Japan comprises a vertically integrated land-based farm and processing facility, and Cflow’s delivery will cover the entire fish handling value chain across six buildings – from smolt to slaughter. The system is designed with a strong focus on fish welfare, operational reliability, and optimal production flow.

Norway-based Pure Salmon Technology – a company owned by Pure Salmon – will supply the RAS system to the facility and manage Cflow’s delivery.

Respect for the fish

“We have worked closely with Pure Salmon and Pure Salmon Technology since 2022, and we look forward to contributing to a project that will set new standards for land-based aquaculture,” says Gunn-Marit Nerem, vice-president for sales at Cflow. “It’s about combining technological precision with respect for the fish.”

The salmon farm is being built in Tsu City, located close to the major cities of Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka, and will have a total floor area of 137,000 m². The first harvest planned for early 2028.

Per Ivar Foshaug, left, chief executive of Pure Salmon, and Gunn-Marit Nerem, of Cflow, signed the agreement at Cflow’s stand at the Aqua Nor trade show currently taking place in Trondheim, Norway.

Welfare comes first

“The key success factor for a RAS facility is to always make fish welfare the top priority,” said Per Ivar Foshaug, chief executive of Pure Salmon, which is owned by Singapore-based aquaculture investor 8F Asset Management.

“At Pure Salmon, fish welfare considerations are integrated into the design and the selection of technologies and equipment from day one. We follow our projects through all stages – from concept and construction to operation and tailor-made follow-up – and take a full lifecycle approach in our partnerships with customers and facilities.

“Cflow’s expertise in fish handling is crucial to ensuring both high quality and efficiency in production. Our shared ambition is to produce healthy, locally produced salmon in a way that safeguards both the environment and consumer needs.”
