Halibut farmer signs deal for heat pumps at land-based facility

Published

The developer of a new land-based halibut farming facility in Torjulvågen, Norway, has awarded PTG FrioNordica a contract to deliver heat pump solutions for the facility.

The delivery will support energy-efficient cooling and heating in the production plant, which forms part of Nordic Halibut’s strategy to increase capacity and enable more sustainable halibut farming.

Nordic Halibut is developing a fully integrated land-based facility bringing together several production phases for halibut farming at a single location. The facility will help the company increase production capacity towards a target of up to 10,350 tonnes of halibut annually.

The collaboration between PTG FrioNordica and Nordic Halibut dates back to 2010. Since then, the company has delivered heat pump and refrigeration solutions to a number of Nordic Halibut’s facilities in Norway.

Johnny Valle: PTG has a strong partnership with Nordic Halibut.

“We have enjoyed a strong partnership with Nordic Halibut for more than 15 years, and we are pleased to contribute to the development of their new facility in Torjulvågen. Land-based aquaculture places high demands on stable temperature control and energy-efficient operations, and this is where our heat pump solutions add significant value,” said Johnny Valle, sales and marketing director at PTG FrioNordica.

Energy-efficient control

PTG FrioNordica’s delivery consists of two industrial heat pumps using ammonia as the refrigerant. The systems are designed for both cooling and heating of process water, ensuring optimal temperature control in production.

The delivery includes titanium wastewater heat exchangers for efficient heat recovery, circulation and process pumps with variable frequency drives, and a PLC-based control system.

The heat pumps are designed for energy-efficient operation with high levels of heat recovery from process water, helping to reduce overall energy consumption.

“We are committed to selecting solutions that ensure stable operations and efficient energy use in our facilities. Our collaboration with PTG FrioNordica has worked well over many years, and we look forward to implementing these solutions in our new facility in Torjulvågen,” said Gunnar Brekstad at Nordic Halibut.
