First Water will triple current production

At the weekend, the Icelandic company stocked fish into one of its new 3,700m³ fish farming tanks.

The company describes the addition of the smolts as an important step forward in its efforts to scale up its land-based salmon farming.

"This is the first of eight tanks in our first production line. The remaining tanks are nearing completion and will be put into service in the coming months," the company, formerly known as Landeldi, said in a social media update.

The systems – including the tanks and surrounding infrastructure – have been largely developed in-house, based on over three years of experience from the company’s pilot plant. According to First Water, that knowledge has been crucial in every choice it has made: what works, what needs to be improved, and what it is leaving behind.

Much larger fish

"With these eight tanks, we will triple our current production capacity and be able to produce much larger fish than we have done in the pilot phase," emphasises First Water.

Construction is already under way for the next phase: eight new tanks of 5,500m³ each. When they are complete, the company will have completed phase 1 – out of a total of 6.

"Today marks a great achievement, but we are only at the beginning. The road ahead is ambitious, and we could not be more enthusiastic."

First Water is located in Thorlakshavn on the south coast of Iceland, approximately 45 km from Reykjavík and 94 km from Keflavík International Airport.
