Salfjord takes several steps forward
The project to build a large land-based salmon farm has made progress on several fronts
The developer of a 43,000-tonnes-per-year land-based salmon farm in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway, has given an update on progress.
Salfjord AS said it had several key milestones in the first half of 2025 and continues to make significant progress toward developing one of Norway’s largest land-based aquaculture facilities at Tjeldbergodden, in Aure municipality.
“We now have all the key prerequisites in place to realise the project. This is a strong signal to investors, partners, and the local community that Salfjord is delivering as planned,” said company chairman Jan Harald Hauvik in a press release.
36,500 tonnes HOG
In May, final confirmation was received for the aquaculture licences at Tjeldbergodden. The permit corresponds to 27 of Norway’s traditional sea-based salmon licences. Salfjord’s initial production plan is based on annual sales of 36,500 tonnes of salmon HOG (head on gutted).
“This provides us with a solid foundation for long-term investments with sensible returns, as well as flexibility to optimise production in line with market and seasonal conditions,” said chief executive Hans Ramsvik.
Salfjord has secured 55 MW of power for the Tjeldbergodden site, along with a place in energy provider Statnett’s queue for an additional 55 MW for Salfjord 2 at Hyttneset, further west in Aure municipality.
New quay
The company has also strengthened its management team with the appointment of Robin Fladseth as chief operating officer. Fladseth spent more than 12 years with SalMar, first as an operations technician and then an operations manager at the salmon giant’s land-based facilities.
Groundworks at Tjeldbergodden are progressing as planned. A new quay was completed in April, and surplus aggregate from the site is already being used in projects such as the construction of a new hospital and road improvements.
Salfjord will use a hybrid recirculating / flow-through facility similar to the system used by land-based fish farmer Salmon Evolution at Indre Harøy, also in Møre og Romsdal.
