Patent received for Razone RAS water treatment technology

Published

Normex, a Norwegian maker of ozone systems, has been granted a patent for Razone – a technology developed to ensure stable and controlled water quality in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS).

The company said the patent confirms the novelty of the technology and marks an important step in its continued focus on land-based aquaculture.

Razone keeps RAS water clean by using ozone to effectively eliminate microorganisms, microparticles, and pollution. It is designed for continuous commercial operation in modern RAS facilities. The solution reduces biological risk, particularly during intensive phases of juvenile fish production, where even minor fluctuations in water quality can have significant consequences.

Stable water quality

“Stable water quality is essential for fish health and production in RAS facilities. Razone has been developed to give farmers better control, more predictable operations and improved fish welfare,” Normex chief executive Stig Ove Johansen said in a press release.

The patent strengthens Normex’s position as a technology provider for land-based aquaculture in Norway and internationally, and provides increased confidence for customers and partners regarding the solution’s reliability and scalability.

Stig Johansen: "Razone has been developed to give farmers better control, more predictable operations and improved fish welfare."

How Razone works

  • Ozone clarifies and improves water quality by removing dissolved organic matter in RAS systems
  • Removes colloidal solids by microflocculation, oxidation and flotation
  • Removes micro-flocculated particles due to oxidation with ozone, which makes them easier to remove
  • A lot of organic matter in RAS systems creates a breeding ground for the growth of deadly nitrates. Ozone renders the nitrates harmless.

“This is an important milestone for us and confirms the relevance of Razone in modern RAS facilities. With the patent in place, we have a clearer foundation for further development and implementation in commercial RAS environments,” added Johansen.

Normex delivers complete, end-to-end solutions, from design and engineering to installation, and provides user training and ongoing service agreements.

The company offers systems for ozone treatment of intake and circulation water, removal of microparticles with ozone and without the use of harmful chemicals, disinfection of vessels and pipe systems, and treatment of wastewater.

Since its founding in 2003, Normex has delivered more than 300 systems worldwide, primarily to the aquaculture, maritime, and land-based fish industries.
